Yesterday I was stumbling around the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco's Natural History Museum) and kind of scoffing at their dioramas since New York's are so legendary. (Side note: The Academy's were really nice, I was just being a dick). Then my mum pointed out the elephants in the mural behind the Zebras:



That is fantastic.

I also learned about the Pistol Shrimp and Goby's mutualist relationship, saw a Giraffe-Necked Weevil, and was terrified by a live albino alligator!

Help my brother win a 6 month residency (and $100,000) in and around Australia's great barrier reef! This is the leg up he needs to hasten his transition to a full-time nature show host! Go watch his video then give him the five stars he so clearly deserves! Then go watch the videos of his competition and rate them one star for being such utter crap! Then go check out the crazy fish video he just posted on his blog! Crazy, right?! So many exclamation points!!!

NOTE: He's wearing the bikini to make a mockery of more than a few female applicants whose entire application videos seem to consist of little more than them running/jumping/swimming around in their skivvies.

Abysmal Depths Populated by Monsters

I like to think that this is what our first encounter with alien life will look like (although in reality it will probably end up being some single-celled boring-ass thing), the first video beamed back from a Europan ocean probe (as previously reported here). It's actually an "elbowed" Magnapinna squid that presumably snags prey as they brush past its arms at pitch-black ocean depths (full story here).

Shipwrecks and Whales

I have to add that the shadow of a rock in the lower left reminds me of these fantastic Right Whale photographs I just saw on National Geographic's website (via Zooillogix):
